Computer Science Degree Requirements.

B.S. in Computer Science Major: (4-year timetable, schedule through 2012)


B.A. in Computer Science Major: (4-year timetable, schedule through 2012)
A Bachelor of Arts degree in Computer Science requires a minor in one of the following disciplines or another field by approval of department chair: Accounting, Economics, Business Administration, or Mathematics. A minor in Mathematics for this program must consist of MATH 170, 180, 220, 230, and two of the following: MATH 190, 231, 260, 370. (Only one of 260 and 370 may be included.) (25-30 hrs)


Computer Science Minor:
  • C SC 100, 120, 150, 160, 205 (18 hrs);
  • Math 155* (3 hrs);
  • Additional 12 hours from Computer Science courses numbered above C SC 205.


Additional Course Requirements for a BS or BA degree in Computer Science:
  • Integrative Studies requirement (50 hrs) (check list)
    • Writing - choose one: INST 100, 105, 110
    • Social Sciences - required: INST 150
    • Social Sciences - choose one: INST 130, 160, 170, 180
    • Religion/Philosophy - choose one: INST 250, 260
    • Writing - required: INST 270
    • Writing - required: INST 300
    • Fine Arts - choose one: INST 310, 320, 330
    • Sciences - choose two: INST 340, 350, 360 400, 410
    • Global Thought - choose one: INST 380, 381, 382, 383, 384
  • Foreign Language requirement (10 or 15 hrs)
    • FREN/GERM/JAPN/SPAN 100
    • FREN/GERM/JAPN/SPAN 110
    • FREN/GERM/JAPN/SPAN 120 (BS only)
    • all must be in same language
  • Physical Education requirement (3 hrs)
    • HPES 101 and 102 and 103
    • requirement waived if age is 23 or higher before graduation
  • Senior Year Experience requirement (1-5 hrs)
    • SYE 4xx, typically a 5 hr interdisciplinary course
  • open electives to total 180 hrs, assuming 5 hr SYE
    • BS with no minor: 24 hrs open electives.
    • BA with BADM or MATH minor: 27 hrs open electives.
    • BA with ACCT or ECON minor: 32 hrs open electives.


Non-Course Requirements for any Bachelors degree:
  • Hours Needed to Graduate
    • Minimum 180 quarter hours.
    • ASC 080 and MATH 090 do not count toward the 180 hours.
  • GPA requirement
    • Minimum 2.0 GPA overall
    • Minimum 2.0 GPA in courses required for the major
  • Residency Requirement
    • Minimum 15 hours in the major at 300/400 level in an Otterbein classroom
    • Minimum 5 hours in the minor in an Otterbein classroom
    • Minimum 2 INST courses (at least 1 of which is 300/400 level) in an Otterbein classroom
    • Minimum 60 hours overall in an Otterbein classroom, not including ASC 080 and MATH 090
    • Maximum 15 hours of the final 45 hours at institution other than Otterbein
  • Application Requirement
    • Request an Application for Degree from the Registrar's Office at least two quarters prior to the quarter in which the degree is to be completed

* Math 115 or 120 is a prerequisite to Math 155. Math 115/116 or 120 is a prerequisite to Math 170.

** CSC 498 is required only if you first enrolled at Otterbein in Autumn 2005 or later.
